The Cook Out

The Cook Out started almost two years ago with the character Grandma Phyllis. I wrote, produced, and wrote a web-series entitled Freaky Phyllis that follows Phyllis after the death of her husband. She realizes that she’s never truly lived and starts to go out partying, drinking, and dating, much to the chagrin of her granddaughter. After I finished the series, the character was still with me, so I decided to explore what it would be like to meet Phyllis’s family...and the cookout was born. Before writing the series Freaky Phyllis, most of my work was social commentary. With this project, I wanted to meld my love of politics with my love of comedy. My goal was to tell a story about a black family that didn’t leave you sad, but hopeful - a story that showcases our resilience and ability to always have a good time.Grab your tickets when The Cook Out is in your city. In the meantime, head over to YouTube to watch Freaky Phyllis.
